Allergies and Sore Throat

Allergies and Sore Throat

A sore throat is a great irritant. There can be numerous reasons for a sore throat, and allergies can be one of them. If the precise cause of an allergy is identified, it will help in devising an appropriate remedial treatment.

Allergy as a cause for a sore throat
It has been found out that allergy in cases of a sore throat has been linked to postnasal drip. This can occur due to exposure to an allergen and occurs when any kind of congestion in the sinus goes down to the throat. This drainage also results in coughing, swallowing, irritation in the throat, and difficulty in speaking. However, the fact to be considered here is that allergens such as pollen are seasonal. There are some also other allergens including cigarette smoke, dust mites, mold, and mildew.

The symptoms of allergy that occur due to the abovementioned allergens include congestion, sneezing, coughing, and itchy eyes. A sore throat with fever and body aches is also a result of a cold, flu, and viral infection.

Treatment of an allergy-induced sore throat
Prevention of allergy is important if a sore throat or any other related symptoms are to be prevented. Limiting the exposure to irritants is the most important thing that should be done in such cases. Known irritants such as cigarette smoke should be avoided if the allergy is to be prevented.
Windows should ideally be closed or a surgical mask should be worn by people who are prone to allergies when they come in contact with airborne allergens. However, sore throat allergies cannot always be prevented. It is during such times that use of medications is recommended. Over-the-counter medications such as Loratadine and Cetirizine can be taken when the symptoms of the allergy worsen.
In such conditions, doctors usually recommend using a decongestant or nasal spray that helps in preventing postnasal drip, which is the usual cause of a sore throat.
In addition to this, a doctor can perform some skin prick and blood tests that will help in understanding the exact reasons of the sore throat allergy. They are the best to recommend the use of allergy shots in case simple nasal drops do not work.
If a doctor recommends allergy shots, one to two are required every week for a period of over six months.

Natural remedies for a sore throat
In addition to different medications and allergy shots, sore throat allergies can be cured by various natural remedies. The use of natural remedies help in providing long-term relief to this condition and the patients will feel the change soon if the remedies are practiced on a regular basis.

Drinking water
Congestion problems including a sore throat can be treated by drinking a good amount of water. It is a common fact that dryness of the throat gives rise to symptoms like cough. If a person drinks an adequate amount of water, it will not only keep the throat moist but will also help in thinning of the mucus.

Take warm liquid preparations
People who have sore throat allergies should take warm liquids like soups and hot tea, which provide much-needed relief. Gargling with warm salted water also helps in curing sore throat problems. Beverages rich in caffeine should not be taken when a person is suffering from a sore throat.

Honey
Sore throat allergies can be taken care of by using honey as a curative agent. Honey if mixed in tea or taken on its own is a viable remedy for a sore throat. As honey is an effective wound healer it will naturally take care of sore throat allergies.

Peppermint
Peppermint oil spray in diluted form helps in relieving conditions related to a sore throat. Peppermint is known to contain menthol, which helps in making the mucus thin and calms down a sore throat and takes care of various allergens that might have caused the sore throat allergies.

Neti pots
If you use a Neti pot it will flush out the sinus from the body and will offer relief from congestion. In this remedy, specially formulated salt and water solution are poured directly into the nasal cavity.

The fact is that an allergy affected a sore throat will get cured once the allergens responsible for the problem disappear. However, if the symptoms are severe and are causing a problem in your normal life, the help of a registered medical practitioner should be sought for the required treatment.

Allergy symptoms should, however, be not left unchecked because it may further complicate the problem and cause sinusitis in the long run.

A sore throat can occur due to different reasons, and proper medical care and attention will help in getting relief and lead a normal life.
